In Memoriam – Health[e]Foundation newsletter August 2014

With a heavy heart we inform you as Health[e]Foundation, that Joep Lange, chair of our supervisory board and co-founder of the foundation, died in the Malaysia Airways MH017 crash July 17th, 2014. He travelled to the AIDS 2014 conference together with his partner Jacqueline van Tongeren.

Joep Lange was a visionary and inspiration. He was a professor of Medicine / Global Health at the AMC and founder and chairman of the supervisory board of Health[e]Foundation. He also founded the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and served as executive scientific director and member of the supervisory board. He found a companion in Jacqueline van Tongeren, which led to a relationship. Jacqueline was energetic and dedicated to the battle against HIV/AIDS and served as director of communications at AIGHD.

This is a terrible loss. We are devastated. Joep and Jacqueline’s work in the field of HIV/AIDS treatment and global health has been groundbreaking. Their dedication has saved countless lives and inspired many people working towards quality healthcare. With the support of many public and private organizations, notably the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they have played an invaluable role in the international global health community.

Our thoughts go out to family, friends and colleagues.
